SRMC Wins Industry Leader Award from National Safety Council

AIKEN, S.C. (September 28, 2026) — Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor at Savannah River Site (SRS), has been recognized as a safety standout by the nation’s leading nonprofit safety advocate.

SRMC is one of only 25 companies nationwide to earn the Industry Leader Award from the National Safety Council (NSC). This award recognizes companies who are proactive in safety compliance and leadership. Award recipients represent the top 5% of NSC member companies based on lowest total incidence rates and employee work hours within their industry categories, based on 2025 data.

In 2025, SRMC worked millions of safe hours and completed numerous high-hazard jobs in some of the most challenging radiological conditions within the DOE complex. For example, SRMC installed larger, higher-capacity cross flow filters that helped transform production at the Salt Waste Processing Facility; removed waste from two more radioactive waste tanks ahead of schedule; and completed work to move utility lines aboveground in the Tank Farms that significantly improved system reliability and worker safety; among many other tasks over the year. 

SRMC President and Program Manager Dr. Thomas Burns, Jr. said it’s an honor to be named one of the safest sites in the country by a third party.

“Being recognized for our commitment to safety is especially impressive considering the results our team is achieving on a daily basis,” Burns said. “We are setting records in radioactive salt waste processing, retrieving high-level waste from tanks to prepare them for operational closure, and stabilizing some of country’s most radioactive sludge waste into a safer glass form. Earning this award is further proof that safety and operational excellence are the same thing at SRMC.”

SRMC comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.
