Strengthening SRMC’s Cyber Resiliency Through Modernization

AIKEN, S.C. (June 25, 2026) — Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) continues to build its defenses as cyber threats grow more complex.
SRMC, the liquid waste contractor at Savannah River Site (SRS), has significantly advanced its cyber resilience through a modernization initiative to enhance protection of its people, plants, and processes.
Cybersecurity is not a background function; it is a strategic enabler, according to SRMC President and Program Manager Dr. Thomas Burns, Jr.
“By modernizing our infrastructure and building continuous assurance into our daily operations, we are positioning SRMC to adapt faster, reduce risk sooner, and support the mission with greater confidence,” Burns said. “Cybersecurity is not an option; it is part of the critical infrastructure for us, and we are meeting that challenge head on.”
A key element of this effort is the incorporation of modern cybersecurity platforms and tools to elevate the overall security structure while improving critical Operational Technology (OT) systems, such as advancing capabilities in intrusion detection and network security monitoring. With increased monitoring efforts, SRMC can continuously screen system and network activity, comparing it against known attack patterns and normal behavior baselines to generate alerts when suspicious or abnormal actions are detected.
Just as important as the technology uplift is SRMC’s modernization of cyber processes and workforce capabilities. The organization is adjusting how it uses IT personnel and adding focused training so teams can quickly put required cybersecurity controls in place and verify them. New IT and OT tools automate many routine tasks and strengthen system security plans, freeing staff to concentrate on higher‑priority mission work.
Mirwaise Aurah, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, said SRMC’s cyber modernization will continue to be operational-centric, focusing on strategies that will maintain critical security measures to keep the organization agile in an ever-changing digital world.
“These improvements are built on a system where Governance, Risk, and Compliance connect our tools, processes, and people,” Aurah said. “This helps keep our mission defenses strong and flexible to respond as cyber threats change.”
