SRMC Summer Interns Partner with Clean Up Aiken! For Community Clean-Up Project

AIKEN, S.C. (July 1, 2026) — Right outside of a Savannah River Site (SRS) entrance on June 12, summer interns with Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) completed a mission of their own: to eliminate garbage waste, beautifying the road leading to their summer jobsite.

A group of SRMC’s interns, along with full-time, early-career engineers, teamed up with Clean Up Aiken! (CUA)—a non-profit that works to clean up and stop roadside litter in Aiken County.

 

Donning gloves and safety vests, the volunteers collectively cleaned four miles along Highway 278. In a span of 90 minutes, 68 bags of trash were filled for pick-up by other volunteer groups.

 

Natalie Midura, an intern with SRMC’s Process and Regulatory Engineering group, participated in the community service day.

 

“It is refreshing to intern for a company that cares about the environment,” Midura said, “SRMC doesn’t just care for the safety of the nuclear site but also the community.”

 

This is SRMC’s second year working with CUA to keep the roads leading to the SRS clean and safe, according to SRMC Intern Coordinator Allison Brinkley.

 

“By volunteering their time, SRMC’s summer interns and employees are not only helping the environment but supporting the community where they live and work,” said Brinkley, who is also the Projects/Programs Lead for Talent Acquisition. “Their efforts show that even small actions, like picking up litter along the roadside, can make a visible difference for everyone who travels to and from the site.”

 

SRMC is the liquid waste contractor at SRS and comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.
