AIKEN, S.C. (September 24, 2025) — Thirty-four Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) employees volunteered across three United Way of the Central Savannah River Area’s partner agencies during Augusta’s Project SERVE Day of Caring, completing foodpacking, beautification, and organizational projects to support Golden Harvest Food Bank, the Family YMCA of Greater Augusta, and the Sexual Assault Response Center.

34 hearts, one mission! Proud to be part of Project SERVE Day of Caring, where SRMC employees rolled up their sleeves and made a difference in our community. From packing food to beautifying spaces, every effort counts in supporting our United Way partners. Here’s to saving resources and enhancing lives, one project at a time!
Golden Harvest Food Bank, under the guidance of SRMC Project Serve Day Coordinator and SRMC Tank Farm Facility Engineer Keisha Martin, saw volunteers from SRMC come together to assemble and package backpack meals. This initiative aims to supply school-aged children in need with bags filled with nutritious food and snacks every Friday, ensuring they have sufficient nourishment for the weekend.
At the family YMCA of Greater Augusta, led by SRMC Waste Retrieval Engineer Gardner Blackburn, the team undertook various beautification projects. Their efforts included weeding, mulching, touch-up painting, and reorganizing storage areas. The mission of the Family Y is to create programs that foster a healthy spirit, mind, and body, all while respecting every individual.
The work conducted at the Sexual Assault Response Center, overseen by SRMC Waste Retrieval and Tank Closure Project Coordinator Carson Williams, saw volunteers focused on beautification and organizational tasks. This work involved cleaning, reorganizing, and discarding items to aid in the center’s operations. The center is dedicated to offering support, healing, and advocacy for those who have experienced sexual assault.
SRMC President and Program Manager Dr. Thomas Burns, Jr. considers it a privilege to contribute to efforts that truly make a difference in the community.
“Seeing our employees come together for Project SERVE reminds me why community matters,” Burns said. “By volunteering at Golden Harvest, the Family YMCA, and the Sexual Assault Center, we helped meet immediate needs and showed our lasting commitment to support neighbors when it matters most.”
Martin added: “The work conducted annually through Project Serve helps reduce the need for area United Way agencies to allocate resources toward general maintenance and upkeep,” Martin said. “Any funding saved through the efforts our various Project SERVE teams offer can go toward the agency’s day-to-day services provided to those in need. It’s a good feeling at the end of the day knowing our teams have made a difference.”
