AIKEN, S.C. (January 8, 2025) — Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) Health Services Lead Susan Jordan has been selected to serve on the Board of Directors for the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses (ABOHN).
Jordan is a Registered Nurse and is certified in Occupational Health Nursing. She has worked for the SRS liquid waste program since 2017 and has been the lead nurse since 2021. Jordan looks forward to contributing to and promoting the certification of OHN’s as the newest member of the organization’s board of directors.
“I’m excited to have this opportunity to share what I have learned throughout my career in efforts to promote certification of more occupational health nurses,” Jordan said. “Safety is a core value and the most important core value at SRMC. Certification exemplifies a level of knowledge in occupational health nursing that facilitates and leads to a safer and healthier work environment and workforce, which is key to fulfilling our mission.”
ABOHN is the sole certifying body for occupational health nurses in the U.S. An independent, not-for-profit organization, it was founded in 1972 to set professional standards and conduct occupational health nursing specialty certification. The board has certified over 16,000 nurses and currently has 3,500 active certified nurses. As one of the directors, Jordan will be a part of the team responsible for the policymaking and oversight of ABOHN’s functions.
Joel Cantrell, SRMC’s director of Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality, said Jordan’s presence on the ABOHN Board will help her strengthen the health initiatives in place with SRMC’s workforce.
“Susan is a knowledgeable leader in the field of occupational health,” Cantrell said. “Every day, she works on the front lines of protecting the health of our workforce. She treats first aid cases, analyzes and reduces risks in our workplace, and promotes a safe return to work for any employee who has suffered an injury on or off the job. I know she will be an asset to the ABOHN board.”
At SRMC, Jordan leads a team of health nurses that organizes and executes the company’s safety and health programs for employees. SRMC Health Services is now the one-stop shop for most on-the-job health needs for SRMC employees. Their work includes first-aid care for all SRMC employees, management of work-related injuries, coordination of workers compensation claims to include off-site medical specialist referrals, short-term disability benefits, and overall employee wellness programs.
In 2023, SRMC was recognized by ABOHN for the value the company places on obtaining certification in occupational health nursing, citing SRMC's value placed on the sustained support of credentialing in that field. All three of SRMC’s nurses expect Occupational Health Nurse certification in the near future. SRMC’s two other nurses are currently serving on the Board of South Carolina Association of Occupational Health Nurses; Beverly Moody is currently serving as President (Elect) and Felicia Delk is serving as the Communications Director.
SRMC is the Liquid Waste Contractor at the Savannah River Site. SRMC comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.
