Savannah River Mission Completion Donates $10,000 to Benedict College for STEM Scholarships

AIKEN, S.C. (September 3, 2024) — Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor at Savannah River Site (SRS), donated $10,000 to Benedict College for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) scholarships.

Benedict College is a private co-educational historically black college or university (HBCU) located in Columbia, South Carolina, offering several high-demand fields of study in STEM, including Environmental Engineering, Cyber Security, and Computer Science.

The investment will create scholarships that can help students enroll or continue in STEM work. The donation is part of a larger Memorandum of Understanding SRMC signed with Benedict College last year.

SRMC President and Program Manager Dave Olson said the donation will continue to create a greater STEM-related employment pipeline for SRS.

“Benedict College is producing some top-notch STEM graduates, who are in high demand,” Olson said. “There is always a need for top talent with STEM backgrounds, which is why it is important to invest in our educational institutions. SRMC needs to bring new STEM graduates in to ensure we can safely execute our liquid waste mission.”

Benedict College President and CEO Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis said she is thankful that SRMC is partnering with the College and providing needed funds, as well as giving opportunities for students through capstone projects.

“We are grateful for SRMC’s investment in Benedict College and our students,” Dr. Clark Artis said. “SRMC’s donation will help to increase student interest in STEM disciplines while supporting Benedict’s commitment to prepare the next generation of highly knowledgeable and skilled STEM professionals.”

SRMC comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.

Founded in 1870 by a woman, Bathsheba A. Benedict, Benedict College is a private co-educational liberal arts institution offering 26 competitive baccalaureate degree programs and two master’s degree programs. The Midlands HBCU welcomes students from all 46 counties in South Carolina, 30 states across America, and 26 countries around the world. The College also has a diverse faculty deeply engaged in teaching, research, and service.
