AIKEN, S.C. (January 13, 2025) — Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS), donated $10,000 to Claflin University (CU) for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) scholarships.

SRMC President and Program Manager Dave Olson (left) and SRMC Senior Laboratory Technician Regina Hicks, a Claflin University graduate, present a $10,000 donation to Claflin University President Dwaun Warmack. The funds are earmarked for the university’s STEM Scholarships.

Founded in 1869, CU is the oldest Historically Black College/University (HBCU) in South Carolina.

SRMC President and Program Manager Dr. Dave Olson continues his efforts to build a steady STEM employment pipeline for not only SRMC but also SRS.

“SRMC has created a sustainable workplace, and endeavors to create a sustainable STEM-related workforce that will allow SRMC to complete the liquid waste mission by 2037,” Olson said. “Our productivity and employment numbers have increased, while the average age of our workforce has decreased. Recruiting bright, talented students from CU and other colleges and universities allows SRS to mentor these students that seek careers in their fields of study in jobs with growth opportunities.”

CU President Dr. Dwaun Warmack acknowledges that SRMC is a strong supporter and advocate of the university.

“We are extremely grateful for our partnership with SRMC,” Warmack said. “SRMC's generous contribution will allow us to attract new high-achieving scholars and retain exceptional students currently enrolled at Claflin. SRMC's charitable gifts provide additional funding for scholarships, and we appreciate SRMC's ongoing support.”

SRMC is the Liquid Waste Contractor at the Savannah River Site and comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.

CU's impressive national rankings include a U.S. News & World Report’s Top 10 Best Private HBCU for 14 consecutive years, No. 1 HBCU in South Carolina, and No. 1 National Liberal Arts University in South Carolina in Social Mobility.
